In the rugged expanses of Croughfoil, nestled along the Limerick-Tipperary border, lies Jonathan Blackmore’s beef farm, commanding a breathtaking view from its elevated site in Knockastanna.

However, this picturesque landscape posed unique challenges for Jonathan’s agricultural pursuits.

With his farm spanning approximately 30ac, split between grazing and fodder, the seasonal productivity has been consistently hindered by the farm’s north-facing orientation and its lofty altitude – rendering the soil temperature notably cooler than that of the neighbouring farms on less vertically impacted land.

Confronting the aftermath of out-wintering and cattle poaching, Jonathan sought a restorative solution for his farm’s diminishing soil health. Undecided which way he should go, his Agricultural Advisor suggested he try Supersoil.

Jonathan, initially hesitant and perhaps slightly sceptical:

“When I first heard about it it though, this sounds like Jack and the Beanstalk and his magic beans,” he said.

However, his resolve was piqued by the assurance of its organic composition, recognising the potential for substantial soil improvement.

Great things in small packages

When the 3, 1kg pouches of Supersoil arrived, Jonathan and his children were taken aback by the stark contrast they presented, compared to their usual 20-bag load of fertilisers, which typically required a trailer and a lot of man power for transportation.

Put to the test

Jonathan embarked on a trial with a clear benchmark in mind. His previous year’s silage production of 29 bales served as the yardstick for evaluating the success of the Supersoil experiment.

Anticipation filled the air as Jonathan awaited the verdict from his contractor, Ned.

“Well John, what do you think, how many bales?,” Ned asked.

“Jaysus Ned, anything more than 29 and we’re quids in,” John replied.

“…50 bales”.

The outcome left Jonathan astounded. 50 bales, a staggering leap from the prior year’s production, showcased the remarkable impact of Supersoil.

With an increase in yield to six bales/ac, compared to the previous three, the results spoke volumes about the transformative potential Supersoil had on Jonathan’s soil vitality.

The farm witnessed an unprecedented surge in grass quality, with the cattle exhibiting an unwavering fondness for the nourished pastures, even daring to challenge the formidable 7 Joule electric fence in their quest for the luscious grass beneath.

Building soil for a better tomorrow

However, the transformation extended beyond yields and cattle behaviour. Jonathan noticed a significant change in the soil structure.

The soil had become more resilient to withstand heavier loads, where once before it would’ve been impossible to travel the land with more than one bale at a time.

This not only elevated the farm’s operational efficiency, but also offered a glimpse of a promising future for sustainable agriculture in challenging landscapes.

Jonathan’s journey with Supersoil has not only redefined his farm’s productivity, but also revitalised his optimism for sustainable agriculture in seemingly inhospitable terrains.
