Up to 40mm of rain is set to fall in parts of the country in the next day or so, as a status yellow rainfall warning has been issued by Met Eireann.

The warning has been issued to counties Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Clare and Kerry.

Issued this morning, the rainfall warning is expected to remain in place until 6pm tomorrow evening, Friday, March 3.

Some very heavy downpours are forecast at times throughout the rest of today, tonight and tomorrow.

Between 30mm and 40mm of rain is expected to fall, with the possibility of these totals being larger on hill and mountain areas.

Meanwhile, Met Eireann has also warned that cold and very unsettled weather will continue right over the weekend.

Periods of heavy rain, with some severe downpours at times, especially in southwestern, western and northwestern counties are expected.

There is a possibility that these downpours will cause spot flooding in some areas, while some falls of sleet and snow at times are forecast.

Temperatures are expected to reach close to 5 or 6 degrees in northern parts of the country today, rising to as high as 9 degrees in southern areas.

Meanwhile, temperatures are set to drop to below 3 degrees later on tonight, with frost and icy patches developing locally but not widespread.

Poor conditions for both spraying and drying are forecast to continue over the coming days due to the blustery conditions and high rainfall.

In general, spells of rain or showers will result in most soil types becoming saturated and trafficability will be poor. Poorly drained soils are likely to become waterlogged, according to Met Eireann.
