Met Éireann has said the early days of this week will be largely dry before more unsettled weather develops bringing some heavy rain at times.

The forecast shows that overall rainfall amounts are expected to be above average across the country, but there is uncertainty about exact amounts.

With above average rainfall expected over the coming week, soil moisture deficits will generally decrease by 10mm to 25mm.

There is a chance that some soils in the north and north-west will become waterlogged.

Overall, mean air temperatures will be around or slightly above average this week, while mean soil temperatures will continue above normal.

Weather

Once any mist and fog clears, this morning (Monday, August 24) will be dry and sunny. Cloud will build in the west and south-west later bringing scattered light showers.

Highest daytime temperatures of 18° to 23°C with light, occasionally moderate east or southeast breezes.

Tonight will be dry in the north and east, cloudier in the south and west where there will be some showers. Temperatures will linger between 10° to 15° in light to moderate easterly breezes.

Cloudy on Tuesday with some sunny spells, dry in many areas with just well scattered showers. Rain will extend from the south during the afternoon, reaching the north and north-west later.

Top temperatures of 18° to 23° with light to moderate easterly breezes.

Cloudy on Tuesday night with showery rain, heavy at times. It will be another mild night with temperatures of 13° to 16° in light to moderate, occasionally fresh easterly winds.

Wednesday will bring cloud and sunny spells with showers or longer spells of rain. Some of the rain will be heavy at times, with a risk of thunderstorms and possible surface flooding.

Light to moderate east or south-east breezes with top temperatures of 19° to 24°.

Further showers or longer spells of rain on Wednesday night before becoming dry for a time. Another band of rain will arrive in southern parts by morning.

Another humid night with the mercury staying between 13° to 16° in mostly light easterly winds.

After a dry and cloudy start on Thursday, rain in the south and south-east will extend to most areas during the day, with a risk of thunderstorms.

Highest afternoon temperatures will be of 17° to 21° in mainly light easterly or variable winds.

Friday will bring a mixture of cloud, sunny spells and scattered showers. Highest temperatures of 17° to 21°, in a moderate north-westerly wind.

There is currently a lot of uncertainty about the forecast for next weekend. Further rain and showers at times are likely, along with some drier spells.

Met Éireann

In its latest farming commentary, Met Éireann said that drying conditions drying conditions will be mostly moderate to good at first before deteriorating from Tuesday.

A potato blight advisory is also in effect as weather conditions conducive to the spread of potato blight will develop in many areas from Wednesday to Friday.

There will be mostly good opportunities for spraying up until Tuesday away from a few possible showers later Monday.
