A calf born with two heads in the United States was a one-in-400-million type of birth, her owners have said.
The calf has two ears, four eyes, two noses, and two mouths, and has been named ‘Deux Face’, which her owners say is French for ‘two face’.
When the owners of Breaux Farms LLC in Cossinade, Louisiana discovered the cow had given birth to a calf with two faces, they said this type of birth was a one-in-400-million chance.
The calf’s mother, called Olaf, has previously calved twice without any issues.
Since the birth of the calf on February 28, Breaux Farms confirmed that “several” vets are “involved”, with whom they are “discussing Deux Face’s health concerns”.
The owners of Breaux Farms said: “It is amazing to see how many people support what we are doing.
“She does not appear to be suffering or in any pain. We are monitoring her constantly and taking it day by day. She has beaten many odds, but only time will tell her fate,” they added.
The farm has stated Deux Face “is not for sale”, and that they are not allowing any visitors.
Condition of the calf
The calf’s two mouths are understood to connect at the back of the throat, with Breaux Farms noting that “both mouths have the same movements”.
They added that the calf is feeding from both mouths, but that they mainly feed her from the left one as “her right mouth is slightly deformed“.
Due to the calf being unable to stand, the owners have made a sling to support the calf on her feet and “work her legs”.
They said that Deux Face has “pushed herself up” while they were supporting her “so she did not fall over”.
As the calf is unable to stand and feed from its mother, they have been bottle feeding her since she was born.
The farm confirmed that the calf can breathe out of both noses at the same time, and that her eyes respond to light and movement.
The owners said: “We know this calf will have a short life span and will most likely only live a few days. She has beaten a lot of odds by being born alive.
“We know that not everyone has the same views on the situation and no matter right or wrong everyone is in entitled to their own opinion.
“We were chosen to care for Deux Face, we wonder, but do not question why,” they added.
