The annual Irish Hereford Breed Society’s spring show and sale is set to take place at GVM Kilmallock, Co. Limerick, this coming Friday, April 19.

The show will begin at 10:00a.m, followed by the sale at 1:00p.m sharp. According to the breed society, a total of 51 bulls have been entered in the sale.

The full catalogue is available for farmers to view on the Irish Hereford Breed Society website.

All bulls will be pre-inspected and weighed on the morning of the sale in the mart by an independent inspector.

Patrick O’Donnell from Glenvalley Herefords in Cork will be judging the classes in the pre-sale show, and Eamonn Gaffney will be returning as the auctioneer at the sale.

The breed society explained that of the 51 bulls:

  • 70% are rated four or five star for carcass weight or carcass conformation;
  • 75% are above breed average on the dairy beef index (DBI);
  • 60% are rated four or five star on the terminal index;
  • All bulls will be sire verified, semen checked and will be pre-inspected on the morning of the sale.

Irish Hereford Prime is sponsoring €200 towards each bull sold for €3,200 and over at the sale in Kilmallock.

According to the society: “This is an ideal opportunity for dairy farmers to purchase their next beef sire ahead of the upcoming breeding season.”

Bidding is also available through LSL Auctions however buyers must register with GVM Kilmallock in advance of the sale.

The Kilmallock sale is taking place as part of a series of spring society sales.

The society hosted its premier spring show and sale at Tullamore on Saturday, March 23, as well as sales in:

  • Nenagh, Co. Tipperary: Thursday April 4;
  • Bandon, Co. Cork: Wednesday April 17;
  • Kilmallock, Co. Limerick: Friday April 19;
  • Nenagh, Co. Tipperary: Thursday May 16.
