Ideal for commercial producer

This year’s event gives you the opportunity to source some of the top sheep genetics in Ireland:

  • 200 pedigree Suffolks;
  • €uro-Star rams;
  • Rams bred for the commercial producer;
  • Suffolk-cross lambs easily achieve 40kg weights at 15-16 weeks with the ideal 3mm backfat.

The Suffolk remains number one for growth rate as proven by a number of scientific studies, making Suffolk-cross lambs ready for market earlier. This results in reduced input costs, or, they can be taken to heavier carcase weights if required.

Suffolks are:

  • #1 for finishing;
  • #1 for taste;
  • #1 for the industry.

Because of the breeds high milk output, hard hooves and wide pelvic dimensions for easy lambing, introducing Suffolk genetics to a commercial flock is an excellent counter to the all too prevalent problems experienced with other breeds.

These problems can include soft and/or slow growing lambs, or ewes that have unacceptable levels of udder and feet problems.

Breed performance

High demand for Suffolk tups

With 125 years of history, the Suffolk Sheep Society is not slowing down and, indeed, a new momentum has been found in the last 18 months.

Last year’s sale was standing room only at Blessington Mart on Saturday, August 3, as both commercial farmers and pedigree breeders flocked to the Premier Sale.

Over half the ram lambs sold last year went to commercial farmers, who were typically buying in the €400-900 price range. Ram lambs overall achieved an excellent 75% clearance with an average of €931.

The Suffolk Sheep Society is looking forward to another great show and sale this year.
