Mart report: Trade remains steady in Castlerea despite beef cuts

Castlerea Co-Operative Livestock Mart, Co. Roscommon, held its weekly cattle sale on Thursday (August 6), with the month beginning with large numbers and a strong clearance rate across the board.

According to a mart report published after the sale, the trade was described as very steady with few fluctuations in price, as store cattle continue to make good returns in Roscommon.

Below are some sample prices for bullocks on the day:

  • A 445kg Charolais bullock sold for €1,960 at €4.45/kg;
  • A 435kg Limousin bullock sold for €1,850 at €4.25/kg;
  • A 380kg Simmental bullock sold for €1,770 at €4.66/kg.

The cuts to beef quotas had minimal effect this week as trade held with heavier cattle seeing reasonable returns.

Steers and heifers both saw quotes fall by over 5c this week.

Some notable sales on the day include:

  • A 570kg Charolais bullock sold for €2,350 at €4.12/kg;
  • A 685kg Limousin bullock sold for €2,660 at €3.88/kg;
  • A 675kg Charolais bullock sold for €2,625 at €3.89/kg;
  • A 680kg Angus bullock sold for €2,500 at €3.68/kg.

Cows and heifers

The heifer trade saw some impressive prices for store cattle.

A 410kg Limousin heifer sold for €2,010 at €4.90/kg, while a 400kg Limousin heifer made €1,910 at €4.78/kg. A 395kg Limousin fetched €1,820 at €4.61/kg.

Below are some sample heifer prices from the sale:

  • A 560kg Limousin heifer sold for €2,350 at €4.20/kg;
  • A 680kg Angus heifer sold for €2,430 at €3.57/kg;
  • A 470kg Charolais heifer sold for €1,860 at €3.96/kg.

Dry cows made up to €2,880 in Castlerea, with the top call going to a 880kg Limousin-cross cow sold for €2,880 at €3.27/kg.

A 665kg Limousin cow sold for €2,420 at €3.64/kg.

Cows with calves at foot fetched from €2,700-€3,540, with the top call going to a five-year-old Limousin cow and her Charolais heifer calf at foot.

Calves made from €210-€850 per head, while runner lots made from €520-€1,440.

Weanlings

The weanling sale continues to see the most action in Castlerea.

A 295kg Limousin weanling heifer sold for €1,460 at €4.95/kg, while a 285kg Angus weanling heifer sold for €1,300 at €4.56/kg.

Some other sample prices from the sale include:

  • A 395kg Charolais weanling bull sold for €2,090 at €5.29/kg;
  • A 405kg Charolais weanling bull sold for €2,000 at €4.94/kg.

Castlerea Mart will be celebrating 50 years in business this September, as it was founded in 1976.

A Mass of Remembrance will be held on Tuesday, September 1, at 7:00p.m in ring one.
