Golden Vale Marts (GVM) Carrigallen Mart in Co. Leitrim held its weekly young stock sale on Saturday (July 18), where 74 animals went through the ring.

Taking the top price in the calf sale on the day was a June-2026-born suckler-bred Limousin heifer selling for €1,500.

Friesian bull calves in the sale traded for prices ranging from €270-€480/head.

Charolais heifer calves sold for prices ranging from €630-€960/head.

Hereford calves saw a good trade with bull calves trading for prices ranging from €480-€650/head, while heifer calves sold for €400-€830/head, depending on age, quality and size.

Angus bull calves went from €340-€570/head, while Angus heifer calves fetched from €240-€480/head.

Limousin heifer calves saw prices range from €440 up to the impressive €1,500 paid for the top calf. Limousin bull calves went from €400/head and up.

Belgian Blue heifer calves saw prices range from €380-€800/head.

Weanling trade at Carrigallen

Weanling bulls saw prices range from €3.79-€5.56/kg, while weanling heifers saw prices from €4.42-€5.45/kg.

Commenting on the trade activity, Carrigallen Mart manager Helen Kells said there was an strong exporter trade on the day, with farmer buyers were also remaining active in the sale.

ICBF calf price statistics

Latest data from Irish Cattle Breeding Federation (ICBF) shows the average price paid for Angus bull calves from 3-6 weeks-of-age was €440 in the week ending Sunday, July 12.

Angus heifer calves from 3-6 weeks-of-age averaged €352.

Hereford bull calves from 3-6 weeks-of-age averaged €464/head and Hereford heifer calves in the same age range averaged €407/head.

Calf prices in the week ending Sunday, July 12, are generally trending below the year to date average prices.

Numbers of calves being traded through marts have tailed off in line with the time of year.
