Tullow Mart held its monthly organic sale on Wednesday (July 29), where 160 cattle and 400 sheep went through the ring, with a full clearance indicating the strength of demand.

In a report on the sale, Tullow Mart manager Eric Driver stated that there was "strong demand for beef and forward stores".

Beef heifers on the day weighed from 530-635kg and sold for €2,050-€2,350/head. Prices ranged up to €4.35/kg.

Beef bullocks ranged from 550-745kg on the day, and sold for between €2,300-€2,800/head. The price per kg peaked at €4.56/kg.

Below are some other prices for bullocks on the day:

Two 742kg Simmental-cross bullocks sold for €2,740/head, at €3.69/kg;
A 715kg Hereford-cross bullock sold for €2,700 at €3.78/kg;
A 645kg Aubrac-cross bullock sold for €2,650 at €4.11/kg;
A 660kg Limousin-cross bullock sold for €2,600 at €3.94/kg.

The organic trade is being impacted by the drought with grass shortages affecting the store trade as lighter stores ease due to the restricted growth rates.

Store heifers weighing from 295-480kg sold for between €1,720-€2,200/head. Prices per kg went up to €4.80/kg.

Store bullocks weighing from 280-383kg sold for between €1,720-€2,200/head. Forward store bullocks sold up to €4.78/kg, while lighter store bullocks sold up to €5.14/kg.

Three 383kg Limousin-cross bullocks sold for €1,970/head, at 5.14/kg.

Sheep

The sheep trade saw breeding ewes sell from €220-€315/head. A pen of eight ewe lambs weighing on average 32kg, sold for €156/head, equivalent to €4.86/kg.

Another pen of 20 ewe lambs weighing on average 38kg sold for €164/head, equivalent to €4.32/kg.

The lamb trade saw lighter-type store lambs weighing from 34-40kg sold for between €130-€175/head. The price per kg ranged from €3.70-€4.40/kg.

A pen of 13 wether lambs weighing on average 37kg, sold for €144/head, equivalent to €3.89/kg.

A number of cast ewes were also sold. A pen of 13 cast ewes weighing on average 67kg sold for €175/head, equivalent to €2.61/kg.

Another pen of 12 cast ewes weighing on average 65kg sold for €170/head, equivalent to €2.62/kg.

Tullow Mart hosts weekly sheep and cattle sales, while its first Tullow Sheep Breeders Show and Sale of the year will commence on Wednesday, August 5.
