Golden Vale Marts held their weekly young stock (July 25) and general cattle sale (July 27) in Carrigallen Mart, Co. Leitrim, where trade was varied across the week.

The highlight of Saturday's young stock sale was the purchase of a Limousin bull calf, born on May 18, for €1,360.

There were 114 cattle on sale with a 96% clearance rate.

The weanling bull trade saw price range from €3.25-€5.63/kg, while heifer weanlings saw prices from €3.43-€5.82/kg.

Both are up on last week's top calls/kg, indicating strong demand continuing.

The top call for a weanling bull went to a Charolais weanling weighing 364kg that sold for €2,050 at €5.63/kg.

The top call in the heifer weanling sale went to two early January-born Limousin-cross animals weighing 268kg each that sold for €1,560/head at €5.82/kg.

The range of prices paid during the calf trade are listed below.

Another impressive sale on the day included the €1,310 paid for a Limousin-cross bull for an early-April-born calf.

A mart report issued after the sale said there was an active exporter and farmer trade that day.

Cattle sale

Monday's cattle sale in GVM Carrigallen saw more varied trade, with prices back this week, a trend being seen in other marts around the country.

Carrigallen saw 88 cattle through the ring with a 98% clearance rate, indicating that demand remains despite the price falling.

Bullocks saw prices from €2.97-€4.25/kg, with final calls from €1,360-€3,120/head, while heifers ranged between €3.05-€4.03/kg and €1,280-€2,940/head.

A number of dry cows went through the mart as well and these fetched from €1.74-€4.07/kg.

The top call per kg for dry cows went to a 3-year-old Limousin-cross weighing 570kg and sold for €4.07/kg totalling €2,320.

GVM Carrigallen Mart will hold a special weanling sale on Saturday, August 15.
