Kilkenny Mart hosted its weekly general cattle sale on Thursday (August 28), with approximately 820 cattle on offer.

Auctioneer George Chandler said that beef bullocks and heifers were not as plentiful in the sale, adding that "perhaps the rain that has fallen in the last two days here in Kilkenny may stop panic selling" of cattle.

He also said that there was "no great variation" in prices compared to the previous week, and described the cattle in the most recent sale as "plainer".

Heavy bullocks over 600kg averaged €3.45/kg or €2,350/head in the most recent sale.

Some sample prices from the sale include:

A Charolais stock bull weighing 1,105kg sold for €3,820 or €3.46/kg.
A batch of eight Friesian bullocks weighing 760kg sold for €2,360 or €3.11/kg.
Four Limousin bullocks weighing 810kg sold for €3,000 or €3.70/kg.
Two Angus bullocks weighing 690kg sold for €2,400/head or €3.48/kg.

Beef heifers averaged €3.65/kg or €2,545/head. Two Limousin heifers weighing 675kg sold for €2,700 or €4.00/kg.

500-600kg bullocks averaged €3.70/kg or €1,990/head. The stand-out sale in this category was a 580kg Limousin bullock that sold for €4.66/kg or €2,700.

Five Angus bullocks weighing 525kg sold for €1,900/head or €3.62/kg.

Bullocks in the 400-500kg category averaged €3.60/kg or €1,625/head, while bullocks under 400kg averaged €3.75/kg or €1,350/head.

Three Friesian bullocks weighing 460kg sold for €1,580/head or €3.43/kg.

Another three Limousin bullocks weighing 485kg sold for €2,160 or €4.45/kg.

Seven Charolais bullocks weighing 330kg sold for €4.36/kg or €1,440/head.

Two Friesian bullocks weighing 345kg sold for €1,150 or €3.33/kg.

Cull cows and heifers

Friesian cull cows ranged in price from €1.40-€3.20/kg and continental cull cows ranged in price from €3.00-€3.70/kg.

Forward store heifers averaged €3.55/kg or €1,750/head and light store heifers averaged €3.60/kg or €1,280/head.

Eight Angus heifers weighing 485kg sold for €3.40/kg or €1,650/head.

Six Angus heifers weighing 305kg sold for €1,300/head or €4.26/kg.
