The passing of John Geary senior, of Geary’s Garage, Kilmeedy, Co. Limerick, was noted with great sadness at AgriLand.

Geary’s Garage has, for many years, been associated with John Deere tractors and machinery.

John was born in 1941 and died on Saturday, October 27, leaving behind his wife Tess and their five children. He was laid to rest in the cemetery of St. Ita’s Church, Kilmeedy, on Sunday.

John Geary senior was the grandson of John J Geary – the founder of Geary’s Garage. It was back in the late 1920s that he added farm machinery as an extra enterprise to an already-established family business.

Later it was his son, Brian Geary, who took over the reins, adding Steyr – the Austrian-built tractor line-up – to the range of machines being sold. He eventually handed stewardship of the firm to John Geary senior in the 1970s.

Engineering background

Having trained with an engineering company in Dublin, John Geary senior returned to Kilmeedy where he took on the Universal tractor agency – a manufacturer that offered smaller alternatives to the Steyrs already being sold.

New Holland was also added to the list of agencies, though the brand didn’t include tractors at that time.

It was in 1979 that John Deere offered the company a franchise; the Co. Limerick dealership has remained with the brand ever since.

In 2011, Geary’s Garage opened a second outlet in Clarecastle, thus extending the area it serves into Co. Clare.

John Deere tractors and machinery are sold through both establishments, along with several other brands of implements/machinery. These include Hi-Spec, McConnel, Lemkem and Rauch.

Heading up Geary’s Garage

Presently, Geary’s Garage is headed by the third ‘John Geary’ to run the company. He joined the family firm in 1997 and became its managing director in 2010.
