An Garda Síochána Kildare have confirmed that a tractor was among 12 vehicles that were seized after being found to be driven without insurance.

Gardaí outlined that the tractor was seized yesterday (Wednesday July 9) as part of a National Day of Action, which focused on targeting uninsured drivers across the country.

The seized tractor appears to be a Massey Ferguson 4345 with a Tanco 220 front loader attached.

Officers stated that court proceedings will now follow for the offenders.

According to gardaí, driving without insurance should not be considered as a "minor offence" as it can carry "serious" consequences.

It has been reported that such an offence can lead to the following consequences:

  • Mandatory disqualification from driving (up to two years);
  • Fines of up to €5,000;
  • Up to six months' imprisonment;
  • Seizure of your vehicle.

In a social media post, An Garda Síochána Kildare emphasised to motorists that "insurance is not optional."

"Insurance is a legal requirement that protects you, your passengers and every other road user.

"If you choose to drive uninsured, expect to be stopped, expect your vehicle to be seized, and expect to face the consequences.

"No insurance; no excuses," the post added.

Separately, gardaí also seized a different tractor in Co. Mayo for multiple alleged road traffic offences last week.

Members of the Mayo Roads Policing Unit were conducting the high-visibility checkpoint with the Road Safety Authority (RSA) on the N59 in the north of the county on Thursday, July 2.

Officers said that they stopped the tractor "after the driver decided to take a sudden detour on seeing the roads policing checkpoint ahead".

Gardaí then checked the tractor's details on the insurance database using active mobility technology.

According to gardaí, this check showed that the vehicle had no insurance, which the driver admitted.

In addition to this, it was found that the tractor had no tax as it had been expired over 3,000 days.

The driver also admitted that they had no valid driving licence.

The tractor was then seized and a court appearance is to follow.
