The national average price for a pound (454g) of butter in June 2026 stood at €4.29, an decrease of 54c on the same time last year, according to the Central Statistics Office (CSO).
The National Average Prices for selected goods and services for June 2026 also a range of other price decreases across some shopping basket staples.
The national average price of 1kg of sirloin steak fell by 35c in the year to €21.77/kg, while the average price for 2.5kg of potatoes was down by 21c to €3.60.
The national average price of full fat milk per 2 litres was down 9c compared to June 2025 at €2.38, while cheddar decreased by 30c to €11.03/kg.
A large (800g) white sliced pan of bread was unchanged in the year to June 2026, while the same size brown sliced pan decreased by 4c in the year.
Commenting on the National Average Prices, Anthony Dawson, statistician at CSO, noted that: "The national average price for a litre of diesel in June 2026 was €1.88, an increase of 23c on the same time last year.
"Petrol prices increased by 16c to €1.85 a litre".
The national average price of a take-home 50cl can of lager at €2.41 remained unchanged compared to June 2025, while a take-home 50cl can of cider at €2.72 had increased by 1c.
In June 2026, the national average price of a pint of stout in licensed premises was €6.33, up 26c in the year, while a pint of lager was €6.75, also up 26c compared with June 2025.
The CSO also said the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 3.4% between June 2025 and June 2026, down from an annual increase of 3.6% in the 12 months to May 2026.
Excluding energy and unprocessed food, the CPI grew by 2.9% in the 12 months to June 2026.
The divisions with the largest increases in the 12 months to June 2026 were education services (8.9%), housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (7.3%), clothing and footwear (7%), and insurance and financial services (5.7%).
The only division to record a decline when compared with June 2025 was furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance (-0.1%).
