Gardaí who were carrying out a checkpoint in Co. Mayo have seized a tractor for multiple alleged road traffic offences.

Members of the Mayo Roads Policing Unit were conducting the high-visibility checkpoint with the Road Safety Authority (RSA) on the N59 in the north of the county yesterday morning (Thursday, July 2).

In a social media post, gardaí said they stopped the tractor "after the driver decided to take a sudden detour on seeing the roads policing checkpoint ahead".

Gardaí then checked the tractor's details on the insurance database using active mobility technology.

According to gardaí, this check showed that the vehicle had no insurance, which the driver admitted.

In addition, it was found that the tractor had no tax, having expired over 3,000 days.

Gardaí also confirmed that the driver admitted they had no valid driving licence.

The tractor was then seized and a court appearance is to follow.

Gardaí said that "insurance and a valid driving licence are legal requirements for everyone’s safety on a public road".

They added that the penalty for no insurance is a fine of up to €5,000 and/or six months imprisonment, plus a two-year disqualification.
