Gardaí have launched an investigation into the Oireachtas Golf Society event which was attended by – among many other notable political figures – Dara Calleary.

News emerged last night that Calleary had attended the Co. Galway event on Wednesday of this week (August 19), in breach of public health guidelines that had been announced the previous day.

As a result, Calleary this morning (Friday, August 21) announced his resignation as Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine.

In a very brief statement, Gardaí said: “An Garda Síochána is investigating an event that was held in Co. Galway on August 19, 2020, into alleged breaches of The Health Act 1947 [Section 31A-Temporary Restrictions] [Covid-19] [No.3] Regulations 2020, as amended.”

“As this is an active investigation, An Garda Síochána has no further comment,” the statement added.

Calleary resignation

It was announced this morning that Calleary resigned from cabinet.

Last night, Calleary apologised for attending an event this week with more than 80 people, in breach of the latest public health guidelines.

In a statement, Minister Calleary said: “Last night I attended a function I committed to a number of weeks ago, having been asked to pay tribute to a person I respected and admired greatly.

“In light of the updated public health guidance this week, I should not have attended the event.

“I wish to apologise unreservedly to the public, from whom we are asking quite a lot at this difficult time,” Calleary’s statement added.
