A batch of SuperValu Chicken and Ham Pie has been recalled by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI), due to a packaging mistake, where some packs may contain Steak and Onion Pie.

According to the food safety authority, the product contains soya, which is not declared on the label.

The presence may make the batch unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant to soya, according to the FSAI.

The batch code on the affected products is: 26.01.2024.

Earlier this month, a batch of Lidl’s Deluxe Irish Carved Peppered Turkey Breast was also recalled due to the display of an incorrect use-by date.

The affected batch was sold in 130g packs and displayed a false use-by date of June 25 printed on the front of the pack. The correct use-by date is January 25, 2024.

With 29,000 customers across the country affected by power outages, due to Storm Isha and the most recent Storm Jocelyn, the FSAI have also issued advice for food safety during this period.

When fridges and freezers are not running during electricity outages, the FSAI gave the following steps:

  • Keep the fridge and freezer doors closed as much as possible;
  • If the power is out for less than two hours, then the food in your fridge and freezer is safe to eat;
  • If the power is off for more than two hours throw away the food from the fridge;
  • If your freezer starts again within 24 hours, leave the food there. Don’t open the door to check the food as this will raise the temperature;
  • If the freezer takes longer than 24 hours to restart, then you need to check all the foods individually.

The FSAI said these foods are safe to refreeze: Raw meat and poultry containing ice crystals; Vegetables if there are ice crystals present; and fruit.

These foods should be thrown away: Baked items with cream frosting or filling; Puddings; Ice cream; and cooked foods and shellfish if they are showing signs of thawing or have been in a temperature over 5°C for more than three hours.

If water supplies have also been contaminated, the FSAI advised to boil and cool water before drinking it or using it in food preparation.
