The total number of calf registrations to dairy dams has reached 982,981, with total registrations reaching 1,134,940.

The data from the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation (ICBF) shows that some 76,634 head were registered in the week ending March 22, 2024, bringing the total for the year to date to 1,134,940.

The total for the year to date is down 30,660 head on the same period in 2023, when 1,165,600 calf had been registered.

Calf registrations

The total number of calves registered to dairy dams stands at 982,981 head for the year to date, with 61,382 registered in the week ending March 22.

For the same week in 2023, some 80,123 head were registered to dairy dams.

The total number of dairy calf registrations is down slightly on the same period for 2023, when 993,458 head had been registered.

Calf registered to beef dams totals 151,959 head for the year to date, with 15,252 registered in the week ending March 22.

For the same week in 2023 a total of 22,414 calves were registered to beef dams.

The total for calves registered to beef dams is down 20,183 on 2023 figure, when 172,142 were registered to beef dams.

Genotyping Programme

The update from week 12 of the National Genotyping Programme (NGP) shows that 400,807 passports have been issued.

According to the ICBF, there have been a total 430,509 calf samples received in the lab to date and overall, 415,301 calf samples have been genotyped to date.

In its latest update, the ICBF said that last week, 44,887 calf samples were received into the lab and 45,498 calf samples were processed in the lab.

It also detailed that:

  • The average time from birth to sample being received in the lab was 8.9 days;
  • The average time a sample spent in the lab last week was 3.7 days;
  • The average turnaround time from birth to passport being issued was 13.1 days.
