The sheep chairperson of the Irish Farmers Association (IFA), Sean Dennehy, has been appointed the new mart manager of Bandon Mart in Co. Cork.

Dennehy is in his final year as chairperson of the IFA’s national sheep committee and is due to take over the reins of the Cork-based mart at the end of this month.

However, despite the new role, Sean will see out his final year as the IFA’s sheep chairperson.

Speaking to AgriLand about his upcoming new role as mart manager of Bandon Mart, he said: “I’m looking forward to this new challenge.

“I was offered the position last week and I’m looking forward to taking it over. It’s something different for me but I’m excited about taking it on.

“I’m starting on March 29 but I’ll be staying on in my position as sheep chair of the IFA. I got unanimous support from the sheep committee to stay on and see out my term.

It was nice to get the support from my colleagues. I really enjoy my role as sheep chairperson; it has its own challenges but I’m delighted I’m going to be able to finish it out and get cracking on what we have planned.

“The experience I have built up from the role over the last three years along with the help of the sheep committee will be a big help in being able to manage both roles successfully.

“It wouldn’t have been a good time to go chopping and changing so it’s great that we can continue as we are.”

Sean will be taking over from Tom McCarthy who has moved into a new role with AXA Insurance.
