After weeks of controversy in Connacht IFA, the IFA has has announced that a new process for nominations has been opened for the position of Connacht Regional Chairman.
Following a meeting of the Rules Committee last night (Wednesday), it concluded that there were no valid nominations for Connacht Chair.
Jer Bergin, the National Returning Officer, said the IFA has said that this is to ensure there is no advantage or disadvantage to any county or candidate in the process.
Now, a candidate must secure a fresh nomination by his own County Executive, endorsed by the signed support of one and not more than one Chairman of another County Executive in the region.
The closing date and time for nominations is 5.30pm on Friday, February 12, 2016.
Yesterday (February 3) was the deadline for nominations for Deputy President and Regional Chairmen of IFA.
The nominations for Deputy President were all accepted and there are three candidates running for the position.
However, only three of the four regions had candidates confirmed for the election.
Over the past number of weeks there has been controversy in Connacht with regard to nominations of candidates – as four of the five counties had nominated a candidate.
Leitrim IFA then backed Roscommon’s candidate to run meaning only the Roscommon candidate fulfilled the requirement to have a backing signature.
However, a number of IFA members in Leitrim said that the county had put forward a candidate in the form of Des McHugh.
