Status Yellow warning for 'dense fog' in 8 counties

Met Éireann has issued an updated Status Yellow warning for "areas of dense fog" in eight counties from 9:00p.m tonight, November 8.

The warning includes counties Connacht, Cavan, Donegal, Longford, Louth, Meath, Monaghan, and Westmeath, and will be in place until 11:00a.m tomorrow, November 9.

The fog is expected to result in "poor visibility and difficult travelling conditions" on roads.

While Met Éireann is forecasting dry conditions in most parts of the country tonight, areas of mist and fog are expected to return, becoming "dense again in parts, mainly over the northern half of the country, with light easterly or variable breezes".

"Thickening cloud in the southwest will bring patchy outbreaks of rain and drizzle there overnight, [along with] a freshening southeasterly wind," the forecast said.

Lowest temperatures are expected to be between 1°C and 7°C.

According to Met Éireann's weather outlook for the coming week, it will become "a little breezier and milder from tomorrow, Monday [November 9], with wetter conditions developing into midweek".

The forecast said, however, that it would become cooler and more settled later in the week.

Farming outlook

Met Éireann reported that rainfall volumes were well below average across the board during the past week, ranging from 1mm (4% of average) at Shannon airport, Co. Clare to 11.7 mm (40% of average) in Claremorris, Co. Mayo.

However, higher rainfall volumes are being forecast for this coming week, especially on Tuesday.

Despite this, these rainfall volumes will continue to be "well below average, with between 5mm (19% of average) in Malin Head, Co. Donegal, to 24mm (90% of average) at Johnstown Castle, Co. Wexford".

Temperatures

The coming week will also be colder, with mean air temperatures ranging from 5°C to 10°C, and temperatures are expected to be between 0°C and 1°C below average in most places.

"Soil temperatures will decrease and become closer to the long-term average, but will still be above average in places," the forecast said.

"Over the coming week, there will be sunny periods at times, but overall, cloudier than average conditions are expected."

Drying conditions will be limited over the coming days, due to either "slack winds, cooler temperatures or rainfall".

"The best drying conditions will be [today] and Monday [November 9]."

Rain is expected in many areas on Tuesday, but it will become "somewhat drier, but colder from Wednesday onwards".

On Monday, there will be good opportunities for spraying at times, due to mainly dry weather along "with light to moderate easterly or variable winds", Met Éireann said.

"Soil moisture deficits for well and moderately drained soils are between 0mm and +7mm, [and are the] highest in the southeast, while all poorly drained soils are either saturated or waterlogged."

The forecast added that there will be very little change in soil moisture levels during the coming week due to the "fair amount of dry weather, but rain in many areas on Tuesday".
