Mixed weather is expected this week with rain or showers at times, along with some dry and bright spells too.

The latest forecast from Met Éireann shows that temperatures are due to stay around average.

After a dry and bright start in the east this morning (Monday, September 7), cloud and rain will extend from the west to most areas.

The rain will be heavy at times, with some thundery downpours possible.

The rain will clear south-eastwards later followed by sunny spells and scattered showers spreading from the north-west.

It will be breezy in moderate to fresh and gusty south-westerly winds, with highest temperatures of 14° to 19°C.

The scattered showers will continue overnight, mainly in the west and north-west. The best of the clear spells will be further east.

The lowest temperatures will be of 9° to 12° with mainly moderate and occasionally fresh south-west winds.

Weather

Tuesday will be a blustery day with sunny spells and scattered showers, the heaviest falls in the northern half of the country.

Showers will become more isolated by evening and the west to north-west winds will gradually ease. Highest daytime temperatures of 14° to 17°.

Tuesday night will be mainly dry with clear skies, staying cloudy in the west where there may be some isolated showers. Overnight lows of 9° to 12°.

Wednesday will be bright and mainly dry, apart from some light showers. Cloud will push in from the west later in the day.

Top temperatures will range from 14° to 16° in light westerly winds backing south-westerly.

Cloudy on Wednesday night with outbreaks of rain pushing into the west and south overnight. Lowest temperatures will be of 10° to 14° with light to moderate southerly winds.

On Thursday, a band of more persistent rain will extend across the country from the west. Highest temperatures will be of 15° to 19° with moderate southerly breezes.

The current forecast shows that Friday will be drier and brighter with a mix of sunny spells and light showers. Highest temperatures of 15° to 18° in a light north-westerly wind.

Met Éireann

Met Éireann said that a "changeable Atlantic flow" will dominate the country's weather this week.

Rainfall amounts will vary across the country with most areas expected to see higher than average rainfall, while southern areas may see below average rainfall.

Mean air temperatures are forecast to be around average over the coming week, while mean soil temperatures will remain above average.

Drying conditions will be generally be moderate or poor over the coming days, while there will be limited opportunities for spraying.

Soil moisture deficits are generally between 10mm and 40mm in the south and east with some restriction to growth continuing in soils despite recent rainfall accumulations.

Values are generally between -9mm and 1mm in the north and west where well and moderately drained soils are saturated and poorly drained soils are waterlogged.

Met Éireann is expecting little change in soil moisture deficits over the coming seven days.
