Clare Co-Operative Mart held its weekly young stock trade at Ennis Mart on Tuesday (August 18), as 320 calves, runners, and weanlings went through the ring.

In a report issued by the mart, it was described as a "good size" sale.

There were 20 calves on offer, with the numbers of runners presenting beginning to increase as we move into the autumn period.

The calf trade saw Hereford-cross calves fetch up to €880/head, while continental calves made up to €890/head.

The mart saw a small number of reared Friesian bulls on sale, which sold up to €400/head.

The report noted how the trade is being "held up" by the bull weanling sales, which are seeing some significant prices paid.

It added that the heifer weanlings also increased by 10c/kg, but this was helped by the high quality of the cattle on display.

The stand-out sale in the weanling bullock ring was the €1,500 paid for a 215kg Limousin-cross weanling bull sold at €6.97/kg.

Other impressive sales include the €2,250 paid for a 330kg Limousin-cross weanling bull sold for €6.81/kg, while a 210kg Charolais-cross weanling bull sold for €1,360 at €6.47/kg.

Other notable weanling bull sales on the day include:

A 290kg Limousin-cross weanling bull sold for €1,800 at €6.20/kg;
A 365kg Belgian Blue-cross weanling bull sold for €2,100 at €5.75/kg;
A 335kg Charolais-cross weanling bull sold for €2,000 at €5.97/kg;
A 410kg Charolais-cross weanling bull sold for €2,180 at €5.31/kg;
A 380kg Charolais-cross weanling bull sold for €2,100 at €5.52/kg;
A 350kg Charolais-cross weanling bull sold for €2,000 at €5.71/kg.

The heifer ring also saw some impressive sales. The top sale was for a 270kg Belgian Blue heifer that sold for €2,000 at €7.40/kg.

Another two Charolais-cross weanling heifers, each weighing 210kg, sold for €1,310 each at €6.23/kg.

Four Charolais-cross weanling heifers weighing on average 387kg sold for €1,890/head at €4.87/kg;
Three Charolais-cross weanling heifers weighing on average 341kg sold for €1,750/head at €5.12/kg;
Three Charolais-cross weanling heifers weighing on average 400kg sold for €2,030/head at €5.07/kg;
A 260kg Belgian Blue-cross weanling heifer sold for €1,390 at €5.34/kg;
A 285kg Angus-cross weanling heifer sold for €1,100 at €3.85/kg;
A 330kg Limousin-cross weanling heifer sold for €1,800 at €5.45/kg.

The mart also saw a small number of sucklers with calves at foot on sale that fetched up to €3,030 for the pair.
