Mart report: See heavy cattle prices from Saturday sale at Carnew

Carnew Mart in Co. Wicklow hosted its weekly general cattle sale on Saturday (October 3) with over 1,100 cattle on offer.

There was a large selection of store cattle on offer in the sale, with the trade described by Carnew Mart's Eugene Clune as "very solid throughout".

The plainer type store cattle were up in price by approximately €50-€60/head in the sale, with an improved demand for these types.

Commenting on the heavy cattle, Clune said that the quality fat cattle "continued to meet a strong trade, with prices broadly in line with previous weeks".

In the cull cow sale, prices surpassed €3,000 for a 792kg Charolais cow that went for €3,040 or €3.84/kg.

Other top cull cow prices from the sale include:

  • A 702kg Limousin cow that sold for €2,640 or €3.76/kg;
  • A 732kg Limousin cow that sold for €2,650 or €3.62/kg;
  • A 778kg Belgian Blue cow that sold for €2,760 or €3.55/kg;
  • A 732kg Limousin-cross cow that sold for €2,650 or €3.62/kg.

In the heifer sale, heavy heifer prices also cleared €3,000 for an 810kg Limousin heifer that made €3,020 or €3.73/kg.

Looking at prices paid per kilo, a 376kg Limousin-cross heifer sold for €1,900 or €5.05/kg.

Other top prices from the heifer sale include:

  • A 402kg Limousin heifer that sold for €2,020 or €5.02/kg;
  • A 434kg Limousin heifer that sold for €2,150 or €4.95/kg;
  • An 810kg Limousin heifer that sold for €3,020 or €3.73/kg;
  • A 716kg Charolais heifer that sold for €2,820 or €3.94/kg.

In the bullock sale, up to €3,410 was paid for an 850kg Charolais - equating to €4.01/kg.

Another 836kg Charolais bullock sold for €3,340 or €4.00/kg.

Other top bullock prices from the sale include:

  • A 734kg Charolais bullock that sold for €3,060 or €4.17/kg;
  • A 310kg Limousin bullock that sold for €1,740 or €5.61/kg;
  • A 404kg Limousin bullock that sold for €2,220 or €5.50/kg;
  • A 366kg Limousin bullock that sold for €1,930 or €5.27/kg.

In the bull sale, prices reached almost €5.00/kg for a 426kg Belgian Blue bull that sold for €2,120 or €4.98/kg.

Another 632kg Charolais bull sold for €2,400 or €3.80/kg while a 596kg Angus bull sold for €2,260 or €3.79/kg.

A 514kg Angus bull sold for €2,020 or €3.93/kg and a 500kg Belgian Blue-cross bull sold for €2,170 or €4.34/kg.

Special sale at Carnew this Saturday

Carnew Mart is set to feature a special selection of 23 in-calf heifers from the fold of Michael Roche's Bagnelstown Heifers in Co. Carlow on Saturday, October 10, at 3:00pm.

According to Clune, all heifers are decribed as being "of top quality and all are handpicked to make super suckler cows".

The heifers are sired by well-known sires including:

  • EBY;
  • ZAG;
  • BB6178;
  • BB4438.

All heifers are due to calve from January onwards to bulls Slieve Feilim Sterling, Loyal, Drumline S and Castlefinn Hotshot.

Many of these heifers are eligible for the Suckler Carbon Efficiency Programme (SCEP) carrying 4 and 5 stars.
