The IFA Election debates come to a close this week after the candidates spent several weeks of being on the road going to each county executive.

Farm incomes, levies, farm safety and the future of the association have featured prominently at the debates. Many of those attending the debates have asked the candidates about their commitment to opening the IFA’s book further, while more have wondered what the new President can do for farm incomes.

Retailer power and Bord Bia regulations have also been brought to the fore at the debates, while the Beef Grid has come in for severe criticism.

Voting gets underway on March 29 at a number of county executives.

Earlier this year, the IFA Executive Council decided to move to One Member One Vote (OMOV), instead of a weighted branch vote, for the election of the next President and Deputy President of the IFA.

Members of the Executive Council also agreed to formally adopt the rule change to allow for two two-year terms for all national officer positions.

This had been agreed in principle at the January meeting. Executive Council also decided to prohibit the use of proxy voting at the elections.

Also, all County Executive AGMs and County Officer elections are to be completed by March 31.
