Green diesel clearances down 0.5% in first 7 months of year

Clearances of marked gas oil, also known as green diesel, were down in the first seven months of 2026.

However, marked gas oil clearances for July 2026 were the highest volume of marked gas oil clearances for the month of July since 2007.

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (October 5, 2026) published its report on fuel excise clearances for July 2026.

Clearances are the duty paid on the quantity of oil removed from bonded warehouses and provide a proxy for sales.

CSO climate and energy division statistician Dr. Robert Stapleton said marked gas oil or green diesel has experienced "little change" when comparing the 12-month rolling period of August 2025 to July 2026 with August 2024 to July 2025.

"However, marked gas oil clearances of 114 million litres for July 2026 were the highest volume of marked gas oil clearances for the month of July since 2007," he said.

In the first seven months of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, green diesel clearances decreased by 0.5% over the same period.

Petrol and diesel

Meanwhile, unleaded petrol clearances were 7% higher in the 12-month rolling period of August 2025 to July 2026 compared with August 2024 to July 2025.

Dr. Stapleton explained: "There were 108 million litres in unleaded petrol clearances for July 2026, the highest monthly volume of unleaded petrol clearances in more than nine years.

"Autodiesel clearances have decreased by 1% in the first seven months of 2026 compared with 2025 and 2% when comparing the 12-month rolling period of August 2025 to July 2026 with August 2024 to July 2025."

Kerosene

Kerosene is mainly used as a home heating fuel.

Kerosene clearances decreased by 8% in January to July 2026 compared with the same period in 2025.

Dr. Stapleton said this equates to a reduction of more than 40 million litres.

"However, kerosene clearances for July 2026 were the highest volume of kerosene clearances for the month of July since 2009," he said.
