The 83rd Virginia Agricultural Show took place today (Wednesday, August 19) in Cavan.
Large crowds attended despite the few heavy downpours which occurred in the afternoon.
While the timing of the downpours during the show may not have been ideal, most farmers were delighted to see a reasonable fall of rain after the prolonged dry spell in many parts of the country.
Judges in the beef rings had their work cut out judging over 60 beef breed classes on the day.
As the event progressed, the final classes were some of the most notable at the annual agricultural event.
The Univet Ireland and Virginia Show Commercial Heifer Champion was won by a February 2025 born heifer owned by Kaine Treanor from Co. Monaghan.
A June 2024 born heifer owned by Sinead and Ciara McKeown took second in this class and third went to a May 2025 born heifer owned by Josh McCrabbe from Raphoe, Co. Donegal.
Judging the commercial cattle on the day was Marie McCormack from Ballymahon, Co. Longford.
In the Virginia Show Champions, her choice of commercial champion went to the winner of the Best Commercial calf under 12 months class, a May 2026 born heifer owned by Sean O'Brien from Culdaff, Co. Donegal.

The Reserve Virginia Show Commercial Champion went to a May 2024 born bullock owned by Jason Teague from Co. Longford.
It was also a day to remember for Sean O'Brien from Co. Donegal as the same heifer that won the show commercial champion, then went on to win the Carnaross Mart All Ireland Female Weanling Championships later in the day - judged by Tom Cox from Co. Roscommon.
Second in this class went to a heifer owned by Sean Hughes from Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan and third went to an entry from the Stevenson Family in Co. Donegal.
The aforementioned Culdaff, Co. Donegal man also won the Carnaross Mart All Ireland Male Weanling Championship marking the end of a successful day at the show for the Donegal man.

Second in the Carnaross Mart All Ireland Male Weanling Championship went to an entry from the Stevenson Family, Co. Donegal and third went to an entry from BSF Commercial in Elphin, Co. Roscommon.
Then it was the turn of the entrants in the Liffey Meats Champion Super Beef Bullock to enter the ring.
After much deliberation, judge Tom Cox tapped forward a May 2025 born bullock owned by the Barnett family from Raphoe, Co. Donegal as the champion in this class.

Second went to a bullock from Jason Teague from Co. Longford and third went to an entry from Sinead and Ciara McKeon from Ballinalee, Co. Longford.

The final class to be judged on the day was Interbreed Champion and this one went the way of Shane Conlon from Co. Monaghan for his Charolais heifer Shacon Adorable.

The Reserve Interbreed Champion went the way of Leo McEnroe from Lisduff Angus in Co. Cavan for his two-year-old Angus cow that was Champion Angus earlier in the show.
