Training scheme for safer ATV use on UK farms launched

A fully funded, industry-accredited training scheme has been launched to help UK farmers and agricultural workers use all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) safely, confidently and responsibly.

The 2026 ATV Bursary Scheme is being run by the Farm Safety Foundation, in partnership with Lantra and Logic.

This year's scheme will fund 50 Lantra-accredited ATV training places for people working in agriculture or studying at a land-based college or university in the UK.

Lantra provides training and qualifications to enhance careers in the land-based and environment sector throughout the UK and Ireland.

Each successful applicant will receive an ATV helmet from Logic, which manufactures ATV-related equipment, to reinforce the importance of combining practical skills with the right protective equipment.

Farm Safety Foundation

The Farm Safety Foundation, the charity behind Farm Safety Week, said that the bursary is part of its wider mission to challenge attitudes towards risk-taking, encourage safer behaviours and reduce life-changing and life-ending injuries in farming.

Manager of the Farm Safety Foundation, Stephanie Berkeley said: “ATVs are part of everyday farming life, but familiarity should never make us complacent.

“These vehicles are powerful, practical, and often used in challenging conditions. Without the right training and protective equipment, things can go wrong very quickly.

“This bursary is about removing barriers and making accredited training more accessible to the people who need it.”

Berkeley added that the foundation wants to support farmers and agricultural workers to build their confidence, refresh their skills and make safer choices every time they get on an ATV.

She said: “The culture around farm safety is changing. More people are recognising that training and helmet use are not signs of inexperience, they are signs of professionalism.

“Through this partnership with Lantra and Logic, we want to help make that message even stronger.”

Accredited

Successful applicants will be matched with an approved Lantra training provider, helping them access accredited, practical training at a suitable location.

The course, which builds on the first year of the programme, covers key areas including pre-ride inspections, understanding the vehicle, safe handling, basic manoeuvres and operating ATVs across varied and challenging terrain.

Industry partner for land, food, and farming at Lantra, Andrew Palmer, said: “ATVs play an important role in agriculture, but they also carry very real risks when used without the right knowledge, preparation and judgement.

“At Lantra, we believe accredited training has a vital role to play in helping people work more safely and confidently.

“This bursary is a practical way to support farmers and agricultural workers with the skills they need, while also reinforcing a wider message that safe ATV use should be treated as a core part of modern farm practice.”

Palmer added that Lantra is “proud” to continue working with the Farm Safety Foundation and Logic on a scheme that can make a “tangible difference” to individuals, families and farm businesses across the UK.

Applications for the 2026 ATV Bursary Scheme expected to close on Friday, September 25, with successful applicants notified after the closing date.
