Groundbreakers: The Galway farmer giving women a voice in agriculture

In this first episode of Agriland’s new Groundbreakers series we talk to a Co. Galway farmer who wants to break down the barriers for women in agriculture.

From herdnumbers to green certs, Mona O'Donoghue Concannon, is determined to make sure women's voices are heard in Irish agriculture.

The 'Groundbreakers' series, which is proudly supported by FBD, will highlight the important role of women in farming, showcasing a number of diverse experiences.

This is especially important as 2026 has been declared the International Year of the Woman Farmer by the United Nations.

In this first episode in the series Agriland news journalist, Kathleen O'Sullivan, talks to Mona O'Donoghue Concannon who is farming near Tuam, Co. Galway with her husband and brother.

Mona talks about the challenges she has faced both on the personal and farming fronts and about the "resilience" that she has had to find to keep going.

She said the biggest driver in her life is a desire "to keep our farm".

"That's what gets us up in the morning and gets us doing the jobs and getting out," Mona said.

She also talks about why she is so passionate about making sure that there are supports in place for farmers because of the challenges and pressures they face on a daily basis.
