Groundbreakers: Sisters growing futures on and off the farm

Groundbreakers: Sisters growing futures on and off the farm

In the fourth episode of Agriland's Groundbreakers series, we meet two sisters who combine careers in education with farming on the Galway-Roscommon border.

The 'Groundbreakers' series, which is proudly supported by FBD, is highlighting the important role of women in farming in Ireland.

In this episode we meet Miriam and Rachel Hastings who are farming with their parents on the Galway/Roscommon border.

They have a suckler beef farm, as well as sheep, mainly calving and lambing in the spring.

Although both sisters work in education, their life also revolves around the family farm as it has done since they were born.

They also share their passion for farming on social media through their, 'Keeping up with the Hastings' account.

Always looking to improve, the sisters are also keen to learn new ways of doing things on the farm.

A key focus for the sisters is shining a light on the vital role women play in Irish farming. They believe women have always been at the heart of family farms, even if their contribution often went unrecognised.

As they put it: "The hidden presence was always there. We all remember our grannies being out on the farm as well as our granddads."
