An election with a difference is set to take place at this year's National Ploughing Championships, as the public will be asked to cast their vote for the nation's favourite cattle breed.

An Coimisiún Toghcháin, Ireland’s independent electoral commission, will be running the 'Great Bovine Ballot' during the three-day event in Screggan, Tullamore, Co. Offaly.

The election will give visitors to An Coimisiún’s stand an opportunity to practice PR-STV voting

Ireland uses proportional representation (PR) for voting in elections, with each voter having a single transferable vote (STV).

Voters will be asked to select their preferences across a range of cattle breeds, including Aberdeen Angus, Holstein Friesian, Hereford, Charolais, Limousin, Highland, Dexter and Wagyu.

Yellow t-shirted electoral commission team with iPads will also be ensuring people cast their PR-STV votes correctly.

The team will also be registering new voters to vote in Ireland’s other elections and have their details correct on Ireland’s electoral register.

Other activities will also include a country and western themed karaoke, a spin-the-wheel quiz, and 'I’m a voter' giveaways.

In order to make sure your voice is "herd" in the "high-steaks" election, visit An Coimisiún Toghcháin stand (Stand 136, Row 7, Block 3) and casting your PR_STV ballot correctly for the candidates who are "most outstanding in their field".

The stand will be located opposite the National Ploughing Association (NPA) headquarters on the site.
