Teagasc will host a number of online webinars on the poultry sector over the coming weeks as part of its ‘Let’s Talk’ series.

Teagasc said that as a result of Covid-19, it along with other businesses had to “think outside of the box” on how to deliver and interact with the agricultural industry.

Earlier this year, Teagasc held four webinars covering the topics of avian influenza; biosecurity measures; chick start; layer management; and an industry outlook.

These webinars were recorded and are available to watch back on the Teagasc website.

As a result of the success of that series, Teagasc will host three more webinars starting next week to discuss prominent topics such as the benefits of eating poultry and eggs, taxation and nutrition.

Winter series of poultry webinars:
  • Wednesday, November 25 – 2:00pm: ‘Poultry & Eggs – An Under Promoted Super Food’ with Professor Patrick Wall, UCD;
  • Wednesday, December 2 – 12:00pm – ‘The Right Tax Structures to Save you Money’, with Ciaran McCabe, IFAC;
  • Wednesday, December 16 – 2:00pm – ‘Poultry Nutrition – Time to Take Stock’ with Michelle Burke, Devenish.

Teagasc has said that all the webinars, which will be hosted by Teagasc Poultry Advisor Rebecca Tierney, are free to register for on its website.

Meanwhile, a Sinn Féin TD has called on Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue to ensure that either “adequate insurance cover or a suitable compensation package” is in place to cover poultry farmers in the event of any strain of avian influenza.

The Sinn Féin spokesperson on agriculture was speaking after it emerged that a case of the H5N8 strain of the disease had been confirmed in a swan in Northern Ireland and in a falcon in Co. Limerick.
