Head of dairy knowledge transfer at Teagasc, Dr. Joe Patton spoke to Agriland about why dairy farming is still a very attractive job.
A review carried out by Teagasc of over 700 dairy farms has found a difference in range of €570/cow in terms of on-farm costs.

The benefits of completing profit monitors regularly has been underlined in a new study on the matter which was published recently.
Net profit per hectare on spring-calving dairy farms increased by approximately €150/ha in 2019, when compared to 2018 figures.
The top 25% of spring-calving dairy farmers are making €992/ha more than the average, according to the Teagasc Profit Monitor analysis.
While feed usage and milk production increased in 2018 the net profit declined by a massive 28% or €648/ha.
The exclusion of farmers’ own labour costs, to date, from cost analyses has been a topic of much discussion and debate at farm level.
