MCPA is a key target in water monitoring. This year saw a drop nationally in the number of pesticide exceedances in treated water.
With increasing detections of MCPA being found in watercourses, Irish authorities are clamping down on the misuse of rush sprays.
Grass
MCPA contamination is a growing problem on Irish farms. In 2016, there were 55 water samples exceeding the individual pesticide standard. Of these, MCPA was the herbicide detected in 37 of these samples.
MCPA monitoring and sampling is continuing in four priority catchments in counties Longford, Kilkenny and Limerick.
Water supplies will be tested once a week for MCPA as part of a new industry-led product stewardship scheme.
