Strong winds this week as Status Yellow warning issued

Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow wind warning.

The warning will be in effect from 6:00a.m to 6:00p.m on Wednesday (October 14).

The affected counties are Donegal, Galway and Mayo.

Met Éireann said south-westerly winds will be very strong at times - especially along the coasts.

Potential impacts include:

  • Debris, loose objects displaced;
  • Difficult driving and cycling conditions;
  • Some fallen trees, branches;
  • Large coastal waves combined with moderate surge may lead to wave overtopping in exposed coastal areas.

National outlook

Across the country there will be mixed conditions this week with spells of rain and showers, but also some drier periods.

It will be breezy or windy at times too.

It will be relatively mild for the time of year, including some mild nights.

Met Éireann said it will be turning colder and more settled late in the week and for next weekend.

Today (Monday) will be rather cloudy and damp with some patchy light rain and drizzle in the west.

There will be some brighter and sunnier spells further east however.

Later this afternoon further outbreaks of rain and drizzle will push in from the Atlantic and become persistent by evening.

Sunny spells and scattered showers

Tuesday will bring sunny spells and scattered showers.

The showers, which will be heaviest and most frequent in Ulster with the chance of thunder, will become more isolated from the south through the afternoon.

Wednesday will be a windy day, mostly dry at first with some sunny spells and just a few patches of light rain or drizzle about.

It will become cloudier in the west and north though, with rain following there in the afternoon and evening.

Heavy rain on Wednesday night affecting the south-west, west and north, will spread to the rest of the country on Thursday morning.
