'Splash of Red' sale sees €6,800 in Co. Limerick

The 'Splash of Red' youngstock dispersal sale in Kilmallock, Co. Limerick saw a top price of €6,800.

The sale included 71 head of stock from John Curtin's elite red-and-white Holstein herd, which goes under the Rosstemple prefix.

Of the animals up for sale, 41 were red-and-white, while 25 were red carriers.

There was only one animal in the sale which did not have red-and-white genes.

There was a mixed bag of in-calf heifers, yearlings, and calves up for grabs on the day.

Curtin also sold off two red-and-white Holstein bulls, one of which was a one-year-old, while the other was four months-of-age.

The one-year-old bull, Rosstemple Lewis Joker P Red, made the top price of the sale, grabbing €6,800.

The bull was born in July 2025 with an Economic Breeding Index (EBI) of €66, and is already breeding.

He was sired by Caudumer Lewis Red-PP and is out of Rosstemple Alphaman Jen Red (EX), who produced 10,647kg/milk at 4.55% fat and 3.52% protein last year.

In calf-heifers

Rosstemple Rammstein Ella was the first in-calf heifer to make her way into the ring.

The May-2024-born heifer made the top price of the in-calf heifer category, going under the hammer for €4,500, which the Curtin family kindly donated to Milford Hospice.

Rosstemple Rammstein Ella is a red carrier, sired by DG DV Rammstein Red and out of Rosstemple Ever Eilee, who gave 7,637kg/milk at 3.72% fat and 3.52% protein in her first lactation last year.

The heifer was served to Caudumer Sietze-PP Red on December 25 last year.

Some other top sellers from the in-calf category included;

  • €3,900 for Rosstemple Hurley Godess Red, a June-2024-born heifer with an EBI of €77. She was served to Caudumer Sietze-PP Red on January 6. Her dam, Rosstemple Boeing Gracie P, produced 10,121kg/milk at 4.01% fat and 3.34% protein in her first lactation last year;
  • €3,900 for Rosstemple Jenny Star Red, an April-2024-born heifer. She was served to Hoogerhorst DG OH Rubels-Red on May 6. Her dam, Rosstemple Andes Jenny Red, produced 5,743kg/milk at 4.68% fat and 3.63% protein in her first lactation last year;
  • €3,700 for Rosstemple Launch Elly P, a July-2024-born red carrier heifer with potential to be the 11th generation of VG/EX heifers. She was served to Caudumer Sietze-PP Red on January 6. Her dam, Rosstemple Malki Elianna (VG89), produced 10,369kg/milk at 3.37% fat and 3.40% protein in her second lactation last year.

Overall, the in-calf heifers averaged out at €2,988/head.

Yearlings and calves

Rosstemple PT Adeen P (red-carrier) was the highest selling 2025-born animal on the day, and the highest selling female overall, as she went under the hammer for €4,800.

The October-2025-born heifer was sired by Delta Primetime PP-Red.

Her dam, Rosstemple Maiki Adeen ET is an EX cow, who produced 10,629kg/milk at 4.17% fat and 3.28% protein in her fourth lactation.

Rosstemple PT Adeen P has the potential to be the sixth straight generation of EX heifers, as her GDam is an EX91-3E, her GGDam an EX93-2E-USA, her fourth dam an EX94-2E-DOM, and her fifth dam an EX94-2E-4*-USA.

2025-born heifers not in calf averaged €2,488/head overall at the sale.

Meanwhile, 2026-born calves, ranging from January to July, averaged €1,694/head.

Rosstemple Endless Love Red was the stand-out 2026 calf, going under the hammer for €3,050.

She was born on January 28, and has since placed second at the 2026 Irish Holstein Friesian Associations Young Members Association Limerick/Clare calf show.

She was sired by Hoogerhorst DG OH Rubels-Red, and comes from Rosstemple Andes Eliza, a heifer who is projected to produce 7,002kg/milk at 3.94% fat and 3.52% protein in her first lactation this year.

The youngest animal in the sale was Rosstemple Trixie Jamie, a red-carrier born on July 9 who made €1,000.

She was sired by Rosstemple Macgyver Jamie Red, and comes from Rosstemple Future Tiffany (EX).

The calf has the potential to be a fourth generation VG/EX heifer.
