A showcase to demonstrate on-farm soil testing will take place in October at the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) Thurles campus.

The event, hosted by SOILCRATES-Ireland - the first Irish initiative under the European Mission Soil programme - brings together over 180 active farmers, agronomists and researchers to discuss policy issues and field-level challenges.

Among the topics that will be discussed is the incoming RENURE (Recovered Nitrogen from Manure) regulatory framework, which aims to allow processed manure to be applied beyond standard chemical fertiliser restrictions, and information from foresters on the benefits and pathways to starting your own agroforestry. 

Co-ordinated by TUS in partnership with community groups and EIP-Agri operational groups, the Living Lab operates across commercial dairy, beef, tillage, and mixed enterprises in Tipperary, Limerick, and Clare.

Rather than classroom theory, the model focuses on farmer-to-farmer knowledge exchange and on-farm measurement. 

The event will take place on Tuesday, October 8. 

Key highlights of the event include: 

Practical demonstration of soil health toolkits;
Discussion on RENURE and digestate;
An open discussion linking active farmers with representatives from local county councils, Teagasc, industry processors, and government bodies on balancing farm income with compliance. 

The event is free to attend and open to all farmers, agricultural advisors, and industry stakeholders across the island of Ireland.
