The Irish Shorthorn Cattle Society hosted a youth development programme (YDP) and information day for Shorthorn cattle breeders in Co. Offaly.

The event took place on the farm of the Dockery family in Towra, Shinrone, on Saturday, July 11.

Society public relations officer Áine O’Donovan Nicholson explained that the day began with a welcome address from YDP coordinator Amelda Middleton Leonard and Irish Shorthorn Society president James Muldowney.

A minute’s silence was observed in memory of the late Shorthorn breeder PJ Kelly from the Ricketstown Beef Shorthorn Herd in Co. Carlow, who passed away earlier this month.

The event was led by YDP members Katie Flanagan from Co. Roscommon and sisters Gemma and Zoe Salter from Co. Cork.

The youngsters participating on the day had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in washing, drying and clipping beef Shorthorn cattle, with the demonstrations proving to be both educational and enjoyable, according to the society.

This was followed by a stock judging competition where Mike Coffey and Hannah Travers finished as joint winners.

Jim Dockery, who has many years of experience in farm safety presentations, delivered a session on safe livestock handling and shared valuable tips for people working with cattle.

Both adults and youngsters also took part in a 'Guess the Weight' competition.

The cow weighed an impressive 804kg, and youngster Luke McDermott, who guessed 797kg, was the closest.

Jim Dockery’s son, Adrian, gave a demonstration on halter making, with both youngsters and adults enjoying the opportunity to try making their own.

The day concluded with a presentation to Jim by Irish Shorthorn Society president James Muldowney and vice president Padraig Flanagan in recognition of the Dockery family’s generosity and support in hosting the event.

The Irish Shorthorn Society All-Ireland YDP final will take place at Elphin Show, Co. Roscommon on Saturday, August 29.
