Thames Valley Police has confirmed that sheep reported stolen from Jeremy Clarkson's farm were actually miscounted by farm staff.

Police had initially received a report on September 2 that sheep had been taken from the 1,000ac farm near Chadlington in Oxfordshire.

Clarkson had reported that 11 of his EasyCare sheep were missing from Diddly Squat Farm after he went to check on his flock.

The 66-year-old believed that the sheep had been taken from the field at night time or when filming for Clarkson's Farm was not taking place.

The former Top Gear presenter was reported to be "furious" and appealed to those responsible for the apparent theft to return the animals.

He estimated that the missing sheep had a market value of around £2,000.

However, in an update issued this week, police confirmed that the reported theft was actually the result of a miscount by farm staff.

They said that all animals had been accounted for, adding that the investigation has now been closed.

"Following enquiries, it has been established that no sheep were stolen.

"The report was found to be the result of an accidental miscount by farm staff, and all sheep have since been accounted for.

"As no offence has been identified, the investigation has now been closed," the statement outlined.

Meanwhile, Jeremy Clarkson recently confirmed that filming for series 6 of Clarkson's Farm is almost complete on Diddly Squat Farm.

The hit Amazon Prime television show is set to return to screens next year.
