Towra Pedigree Angus herd is hosting a ‘YDP Pedigree Herd Management Skills Demonstration’ at Towra, Shinrone, Co. Offaly, next Saturday, August 5.

The event will run from 12:00pm to 6:00pm in conjunction with the Irish Angus Youth Development Programme (YDP).

The Angus YDP encourages people under the age of 25 to take up showmanship and to work with Aberdeen Angus cattle.

The day will kick off with an introduction from YDP Chairperson, Felicity McGrath, followed by a viewing and outline of Towra herd, along with a quick summary of the set-up.

There will be a number of events taking place on the day, including stock judging, which will be facilitated by Nigel Matchett of Birches Angus herd, Northern Ireland. Stock judging will be broken into categories for seniors, under 25s, under 18s and under 13s.

In addition, a regional teams competition is scheduled to take place in showmanship skills, washing, clipping and grooming at the demonstration.

There will herd management skills workshops on practical subjects such as grassland management, allocation of water troughs and suitable fencing.

Talks will also be given on subjects such as handling livestock, genetics, Irish outlets for angus cattle, management, nutrition, and efficient cattle facilities.

Alongside this, there will be demonstrations on halter making, parading animals and safety – which will focus on safe loading, handling facilities, handling animals and hoof paring.

A presentation on record-keeping and farm events administration, courtesy of Herdwatch, will take place too.

According to organisers, there will be prizes and refreshments on the day, with “all welcome to attend – any age, any breed”.

Towra Pedigree Angus

Towra Angus is a herd run by Jim and Tara Dockery with their children, and was established in 1996. Towra herd consists of 20 Angus pedigree females and a small number of beef shorthorns.

The herd has won numerous rosettes at both local and national level.
