Next Monday set as date for major meeting about malting

A major meeting of malting barley growers will take place next Monday, (October 12) to discuss urgent issues affecting the sector.

The Irish Farmers' Association (IFA) will host the meeting at the Dolmen Hotel, Carlow, and Boortmalt representatives have also been invited to attend.

“We have already asked Boortmalt to waive the €10/t drying charge on 2026 crops," Murphy told Agriland.

“But, as yet, we have not received a reply from the company on this matter.

“Given the Harvest 2026 prices that have recently been published, Ireland’s malting barley sector is now facing into a deep crisis.

“It’s important that Boortmalt representatives attend the Carlow event.”

Malting meeting

The IFA had been looking for a formal meeting with Boortmalt, but this was declined until late last week when Boortmalt said they would only meet on condition that those representing IFA sign a legal non-disclosure agreement (NDA).

"This would mean that we could not report back to our members on the meeting. This is not acceptable," Murphy continued.

“We feel it is absolutely imperative that Boortmalt meets to discuss the lack of a malting premium and the so-called €10/t parity charge in place for Harvest 2026.

“We would encourage all malting barley growers to be in Carlow on Monday night.”

The meeting will get underway at the Dolmen Hotel, Carlow at 8:00p.m next Monday.
