Impressive calf prices continue to be paid at marts across the country.
The calf sale at GVM Carrigallen Mart, Co. Leitrim, on Saturday, June 13, saw several of these impressive prices secured by farmers.
Local suckler and dairy farmer Brian Kiernan from near Carrigallen, Co. Leitrim, sold two calves in the sale, which came into a combined total of an impressive €2,800.
The highest price of his two entries in the sale went to a May-2026-born roan Limousin heifer calf sired by EBY.
This heifer calf was bred off a Shorthorn-type cow and sold through the ring for €1,900. It was purchased by a midlands-based farmer with plans to keep the calf as a show heifer.
The farmer has plans to put the dam of the heifer calf back in calf to a sexed An De Beauffaux (BB4438) AI straw.
The same Co. Leitrim farmer also sold a Limousin bull calf bred off Sliabh Felim Sterling (LM8929).
This bull calf was also born in May 2026 and bred off a Belgian Blue-cross heifer and sold for €950.

There were approximately 140 calves in the sale at the Co. Leitrim mart venue with a strong trade and impressive prices seen for both suckler and dairy-bred calves.
May-born Friesian bulls calves made over €400/head in cases and the Angus and Hereford-sired calves generally sold from €350-€600/head in the sale.
Reared Angus bull calves made over €800/head in cases at the Saturday sale.
Continental-sired calves off dairy cows were in high demand, also with up to €800 paid for better type Belgian Blue-sired calves.
Conversations with mart managers around the country would suggest farmer buyers are, generally speaking, more keen for better-type calves and reared calves while export customers are remaining active predominantly for plainer-types and younger calves.
