Gardaí arrested a man and seized over €1 million worth of suspected drugs and cash in Thurles, Co. Tipperary, on the weekend.

Gardaí from the Tipperary Divisional Drugs Unit, supported by uniform and armed Gardaí from the southern region, carried out a search of a field in the Kilcommon area of Thurles.

During the course of the search, Gardaí seized approximately €647,500 of suspected cocaine and approximately €370,000 in cash. The suspected drugs will now be sent to Forensic Science Ireland for analysis.

A man aged in his late 40s was arrested at the scene and detained at Templemore Garda Station under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996. He is due before Limerick District Court today (Monday, November 2).

The investigation forms part of an ongoing operation which is targeting the sale and supply of drugs in Co. Tipperary.

Large fire causes extensive damage to Oldcastle Co Op

Meanwhile, a fire ripped through the building of Oldcastle Co Op in Co. Meath on Saturday night (October 31) with significant damage caused to the premises.

The fire is thought to have broken out at approximately 7:30pm, with emergency services called to the scene.

Confirming the news, a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said: “Gardaí from Kells and local fire services attended at the scene of a fire at a premises at Railway Yard, Oldcastle, Co. Meath, shortly before 8:00pm on Saturday, October 31.

There were no reports of anyone injured. Extensive damage was caused to the building before it was brought under control by Fire Service personnel.

“It’s unclear how the fire started, enquires are ongoing,” the Garda spokesperson added.
