A man was arrested and a number of animals including dogs and horses were seized following a search by members of An Garda Siochána of a premises in Co. Kilkenny this week, Gardaí have announced.
The search took place yesterday (Monday, November 30) in Callan, Co. Kilkenny and was part of a joint operation involving various authorities and agencies.
Taking to social media following the incident yesterday, Gardaí based in the Kilkenny/Carlow region said:
“As part of a planned search under Warrant contrary to the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013, Gardai and Detectives from Unit B Kilkenny searched a premises in Callan today.
“23 dogs and 4 horses were seized under Welfare grounds, including lurchers, terriers and greyhounds.
This was a multi agency operation involving An Garda Síochána, KSPCA [Kilkenny Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals], Kilkenny County Council, My Lovely Horse Rescue, local veterinary surgeon, and dog rescues.
“One male who is alleged to have obstructed the search was arrested at the scene and later charged to appear at Kilkenny District Court.
“A full investigation into serious breaches of the 2013 Animal Welfare Act is underway.
“Kilkenny Gardaí wish to sincerely thank all those who assisted today and those who are endeavouring to rehabilitate these animals,” the Garda post concluded.
