Due the Irish dairy industry’s need for non-chlorine detergent solutions, Hypred and Grassland Agro have developed a revolutionary non-chlorine liquid wash to provide a solution to the ongoing problem of TCM residues in milk.
Hypracid One is a three-in-one product that will wash, sterilise and descale your milking machine.
It is made up of a special formulation of organic acids and surfactants and it does not contain phosphates or nitrates. It is biodegradable and environmentally friendly.
The product has been tested in Teagasc Moorepark and Pallaskenry as well as on a number of Irish dairy farms.
Concern over chlorates & TCM’s
Irish dairies and infant formula manufacturers are advising farmers to move away from using detergents containing chlorine when washing either the bulk tank or milking machine.
The two residues of concern are chlorates and TCM’s (tri chloro methane).
Chlorates arise when drums of caustic chlorine detergent are stored on farm for long periods of time. The chlorine breaks down in the drum and chlorates are formed.
TCM is formed when chlorine, present in chlorinated alkaline detergent, is combined with the milk remaining in the pipelines of the milking machine or tank following an insufficient pre-rinse after milking or the emptying of the tank.
There is a risk that the milk could become contaminated during the following milking.
This could have a negative impact on dairy products manufactured using this milk as TCM tends to be associated with the oil phase and therefore builds up in products which are rich in fats such as butter, cream and infant formula.
Although concentrations of TCM in dairy products are not high enough to pose a threat to public health, such contamination can cause processing problems, which affect the volumes exported and the prices at which the products are sold.
For example, some importers of butter, such as Germany, have a maximum threshold of 0.03 mg of TCM/kg of butter.
Therefore in 2009, Ireland, which is a large producer of butter with a legal limit of 0.1 mg/kg, launched a program to reduce residue to 0.03 mg/kg in order to remain competitive for export.
How Hypracid One works
For over 30 years, Hypred has been working alongside dairy industry professionals to create solutions which aim to continuously improve hygiene practices.
Hypracid One has been developed with environmental concerns in mind, as it offers a chlorine-free solution to bulk tank and milking equipment cleaning.
The three-in-one product has been developed using a new active ingredient, without compromising the undeniable need for effectiveness and simplicity, principles which have always made up the DNA of Hypred.
Hypracid One eliminates chlorine residuals completely from the washing routine through its unique three-in-one combination of detergent, descaler and steriliser.
A research trial carried out at Teagasc Moorepark found that Hypracid One has the potential to be used as an alternative cleaning routine with the addition of a caustic or caustic/chlorine wash at least one day per week.
A further trial carried out at Pallaskenry Agricultural College showed that the use of Hypracid One in conjunction with Hypral One high caustic, non-chlorine wash and Virolac pre- and post-teat spray consistently produced lower-cell counts from the 250-cow herd over a calendar year when compared to conventional caustic chlorine dairy detergents.
A number of farmers have been happy since making the switch from conventional caustic chlorine dairy detergents to Hypracid One.
Harry Collier, a dairy farmer from Abbeyleix, Co. Laois said he uses Hypral One in a cold wash on collection days.
“The following day I use Hypracid One in a morning hot wash and reuse the solution cold in the evenings.
“I also use the product to wash my bulk tank. I am achieving excellent TBC and thermodurics,” he said.
Dairy farmer, James Hanley from Littleton in Co. Tipperary said he uses Hypracid One in a daily hot wash and with a hot Hypral One wash every Monday.
I achieve excellent TBCs and thermoduric results which average at 6 and 140 respectively. Adrian Seale from Mountrath, Co. Laois said he uses Hypracid One hot in the morning and reuse the solution cold in the evening.
“Once a week I do a morning hot wash with Hypral One and reuse the solution cold in the evening.
“I also use Hypracid One in my bulk tank wash. I am very happy with my TBC and thermodurics results,” he said.
