A fire ripped through the building of Oldcastle Co Op in Co. Meath last night (Saturday, October 31) with significant damage caused to the premises.

The fire is thought to have broken out at approximately 7:30pm yesterday evening, with emergency services called to the scene.

Confirming the news, a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said: “Gardaí from Kells and local fire services attended at the scene of a fire at a premises at Railway Yard, Oldcastle, Co. Meath, shortly before 8:00pm on Saturday, October 31.

There were no reports of anyone injured. Extensive damage was caused to the building before it was brought under control by Fire Service personnel.

“It’s unclear how the fire started, enquires are ongoing,” the Garda spokesperson added.

Local TD for the area Johnny Guirke posted a video of the extensive fire on social media:

In a brief comment alongside the video, the TD said: “It’s sad to see a local business in flames on Halloween night, many people could lose their jobs and, if this was started maliciously which puts our local firemen at risk, I would hope that the Gardaí can get to the bottom of this fire.”

Last night, local members of An Garda Síochána in Co. Meath provided an update as efforts were underway to tackle the blaze:

“Emergency services are at the scene of a fire in Oldcastle.

“Fire services are trying to bring the blaze at the co-op building under control. The fire started around 7.30pm this evening. Please avoid the area if possible.”
