When Padraig Gowing, farming in Portlaoise, Co. Laois, was looking for a baler last year he approached his local Kverneland dealer, Francis Young of Young’s Garage in Portarlington, and secured himself the 6500F Fixed Chamber Baler.

Francis had just taken possession of Kverneland’s newly launched 6500 Fixed Chamber Baler, for demonstration purposes. Perfectly timed, Padraig got his hands on it and took it home for a trial run on the farm. As he says himself:

“Once I got the opportunity to use it, that was the convincing factor.”

Managing director of Kverneland Group Ireland, Philip English said: “Joining the world’s only non-stop baler wrapper, the Fastbale, in the Kverneland Baler range, we’ve had a strong performance of the 6500F all through its first season last year, with customers particularly delighted with its trouble free reliability, the quality and consistency of the bales produced and its proven ability to handle the tough Irish silage conditions.”

Top quality bales with the Fixed Chamber Baler

Padraig Gowing is happy to agree with the quality of the bales and ease of handling of the baler.

“The bales coming out of the baler are very uniform, and the edge-to-edge system on the baler leaves every bale looking like blocks; just lovely straight across finish, no ‘fluffies’; a very professional looking bale,” he said.

Listen to what he has to say in conversation with John Doyle, key account manager south with Kverneland Group Ireland:

Spec of 6500F Fixed Chamber Baler

Kverneland has concentrated on developing a sturdy reliable baler particularly suited to the heavy silage conditions of the Irish market and is very confident about the quality and consistency of the bales produced by the 6500F.

Bale formation is handled by 18 closely spaced rollers with two bale support rollers in the lower main bale chamber, while easy in-cab selection of bale density protects the baler against overloading.

With its high capacity extra wide 2.3m pick-up, that Padraig describes as “hungry”, it makes for fast and efficient throughput. Easy gathering of large swaths, with the close tine spacing and small diameter resulting in effective pick-up on even the shortest crop.

As Padraig notes, depending on the crop, “she’ll go as hard as the tractor in front of her can go”.

This is due to the large diameter roller crop press designed to handle crop flow at high intake speeds, while the compact patented internal drive system means there’s no ‘dead area’ at the outside of the pick-up to restrict crop flow.

Despite the class leading working width, the transport width remains narrow and as Padraig particularly likes, the guide wheels fit behind the baler wheels with no need to remove or fold for road transport, making life easier and reducing downtime. “You don’t have to be taking off wheels close to home, you can just drive on,” Padraig explains.

Low net loading height for comfort and safety

One of Padraig’s favourite features is the netting system on the 6500F. Positive injection of the net onto the bale, with the PowerBind net wrap system allows peace of mind for full bale coverage of net on the bale, not influenced by wind or conditions.

While the market leading low-loading height allows for comfortable and safe net loading with minimum manual effort and fast turnaround time.

As Padraig notes the low-loading height means “you can load from the ground without having to stand on steps or platforms”.

With the 6500F, Kverneland has taken a lot of care to keep the safety and comfort of the user of the baler in mind. The added benefit of no platform and steps means that you have complete unimpeded visibility of the front of the baler.

Net loading of the 6500F baler

Easy to work Focus III controls allow control of bale density from the cab and as Padraig notes is “tidy and user friendly’’. He adds: ”After using it for five minutes with an introductory course, anyone would use it.”

Again, for user comfort, functions controlled from the cab include bale density, net quantity adjustment, the status of each knife and drop floor and pick up functions.

Additional features include the new SuperCut 15 pre-chopping system, with specially profiled knives to give consistent chop length with a low power requirement. The 6500F chop length of 70mm is designed to be the ideal solution for producing tight dense bales for improved fermentation, with the additional benefit of easier feeding out of bales and less wastage.

Every individual knife is spring protected against obstacles, giving a greater level of protection than with complete knife bank protection. If it hits an obstacle the knife will deflect and then reset once the obstacle has passed.

High-quality silage for better returns

The production of high-quality bales is key to an efficient operation. Experienced baling professionals will appreciate the well-formed dense bales from the 6500F.

They don’t just look good, but they are better to wrap, stack and transport, giving benefits all the way down the line, maximising silage quality and the feed value of these valuable crops.

Philip English adds: “We’ve tailored a retail finance package specifically for Kverneland balers, with a ‘buy now, pay later’ six-month deferred payment scheme. So you can buy your baler in May and pay for it with three annual November payments.

“Contact your local dealer or any member of the Kverneland Group Ireland team. We’ll be happy to discuss all your baling and finance needs.”
