The Irish Hereford Breed Society has today (Thursday, November 14) announced the appointment of a new breed secretary.
Alan Crowe will fill the role in the cattle breed society that was formerly held by Louise Callan.
The new appointment comes from a pedigree and commercial sheep farming background in Co. Meath and now resides in Co. Longford.
Crowe has spent the last four years completing a PhD with University College Dublin (UCD) and Teagasc, where he studied assisted reproductive technologies for cattle breeding.
Crowe previously studied Agricultural Science in University College Dublin (UCD) and has also been involved with the council of the Irish Vendéen Sheep Society for the last six years.
Louise Callan, who departed the position earlier this year, was involved with the society for five years, and was the breed secretary for the past three years.
The Irish Hereford Breed Society has over 800 members, with over 5,000 annual pedigree registrations.
Hereford calf show
The National Hereford Calf Show is set to take place this Saturday, November 16, at GVM Tullamore Mart, Co. Offaly.
The event is set to kick off at 10:00a.m and will see approximately 80 calves of the breed from across the country on show.
The sponsors for this year’s event are Irish Herford Prime and Dovea Genetics.
According to the Irish Hereford Breed Society, it is hoped that some of the standout bulls from the show may qualify to join Irish Hereford Prime’s expanding bull panel which now forms a key part of their beef sustainability programme.
A statement from the society said: “This prestigious event will bring together 80 of the best Hereford calves from across the country, offering a prime opportunity to witness top-tier genetics and the next generation of breeding stock.”
