The September edition of the monthly Border and Lakeland show and sale saw a top price of 3,700gns this week.

In fact, three individual animals all went under the hammer for that top price of 3,700gns on the day.

Bidding was fierce in the Borderway Mart in Carlisle, with buyers travelling from 23 counties across England, Scotland and Wales.

Wormanby Conway Gloriette was the overall champion of the show, before going on to make 3,700gns in the sale.

The July-2024-born heifer was consigned by Wormanby Farms of Carlisle, a herd which continues to prove its worth, having recently placed third in the Holstein UK Premier Herd Competition, as well as being named Premier Exhibitors at the recent UK National Holstein Show.

The heifer was sired by Sandy-Valley R Conway, and comes from Wormanby Chief Gloriette, who recorded 17,053kg of milk at 3.38% fat and 3.06% protein in her second lactation.

The heifer has eight generations of Excellent or Very Good dams ahead of her, with her grand dam being a herd favourite as she is currently in her ninth lactation and has produced over 110t of lifetime milk.

The Wormanby herd was not finished, as it went on to claim another high of 3,700gns with Wormanby Has It All Rose.

She was sired by Duckett Pfct Has It All, and came from Wormanby Lambda Rose (EX91-2) in July 2024, who produced 15,508kg of milk at 2.52% fat and 3.07% protein in her last lactation.

Overall, the Wormanby herd sold six quality heifers to average price of £3,631/head.

The last animal to make 3,700gns on the day was Boclair Pursuit Gypsy 3.

The May-2024-born heifer was bred by the Brewster family from near Glasgow, whose Boclair herd was named as the Champion Scottish herd for the third year in a row this year.

The herd was also recently named as runners up in the Holstein UK Premier Herd Competition.

Boclair Pursuit Gypsy 3 was sired by Pine-Tree Pursuit, and her dam, Boclair Delta-Lambda Gypsy 3, produced 16,189kg of milk at 3.17% fat and 2.93% protein in her third lactation.

Over all, milking cattle averaged £3,158 on the day, while in-calf heifers sold to an average of £2,520 in the ring.

Youngstock sale

A special youngstock sale from the Brownfield herd owned by Matthew Gemmel from Dumfries also took place.

The Brownfield herd averages 11,402kgs, 4.57% butterfat and 3.41% protein.

The heifers up for grabs were aged between April 2025 to April 2026, and averaged £1,848/head.

Brownfield Raiton Gwen topped the sale selling for 2,300gns.

The August-2025-born heifer was sired by Lars-Acres Raiton and came from Brownfield Mecca P Gwen, a VG cow who produced 8,494kg of milk at 5.77% fat and 3.91% protein in her first lactation last year.
