The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has fully recommended seven varieties of winter wheat for 2026/2027.

An additional two options are provisionally recommended.

For the purposes of comparison, relative varietal yields have been calculated as a percentage of the mean values recorded for Graham.

In other words a 100 rating figure comes in at 11.4t/ha: the accompanying moisture level is 15%.

Fully recommended varieties

The fully recommended list contains a number of varieties that have been available to Irish tillage farmers for several years.

Graham

Graham has a relative yield figure of 100. It is an early maturing variety with good yield potential.

Graham has moderate resistance to lodging and moderate susceptibility to straw breakdown.

The variety has good resistance to mildew and is moderately susceptible to septoria tritici, yellow rust, fusarium ear blight, and sprouting: grain quality is good.

Kubik

Kubik has a relative yield value of 104. It isn early maturing variety with very good yield potential.

The variety is moderately resistant to lodging and straw breakdown.

It shows good resistance to mildew and is moderately resistant to septoria tritici, fusarium ear blight and sprouting.

Kubik is moderately susceptible to yellow rust. It has a low thousand grain weigh: grain quality is good.

KWS Equipe

KWS Equipe has a relative yield figure of 102. It is a very early maturing variety with good yield potential.

The variety is moderately susceptible to lodging and straw breakdown.

It demonstrates very good resistance to mildew and is moderately resistant to septoria tritici, yellow rust and sprouting.

Equipe has good resistance to fusarium ear blight: grain quality is very good.

LG Rebellion

LG Rebellion has a relative yield figure of 102. It is a very early maturing variety with very good yield potential.

The variety shows good resistance to lodging and straw breakdown. It has good resistance to mildew and yellow rust.

The breeder has a claim that this variety is resistant to eyespot as a result of having the Pch1 gene. It has good grain quality.

NOS Bullseye

NOS Bullseye has a relative yield figure of 99. It is a moderately late maturing variety with good yield potential.

The variety has very good resistance to lodging and good resistance to straw breakdown.

Bullseye demonstrates very good resistance to mildew and good resistance to septoria tritici. However, it is susceptible to yellow rust.

RGT Hexton

RGT Hexton has a relative yield value of 100. It is a late maturing variety with good yield potential.

The variety shows good resistance to lodging and straw breakdown. It has very good resistance to mildew.

Hexton is moderately susceptible septoria tritici and fusarium ear blight.

It is moderately resistant to yellow rust and sprouting: grain quality is moderate.

Spearhead

Spearhead has a relative yield value of 103. It is a moderately early maturing variety with very good yield potential.

The variety is moderately susceptible to lodging and moderately resistant to straw breakdown.

Spearhead has very good resistance to mildew. It is moderately susceptible to septoria tritici, yellow rust and fusarium ear blight: grain quality is good.

The two provisionally recommended varieties of winter wheat are: Champion and KWS Scope.
